Berber

The Berber in Tunisia represent a minority inside the mainly Arabic-Muslim culture. They are still very present in some places in the South, the elderly still speak their language Tamazight. The village of Tamezret forms a compact settlement of stone houses on a hill west of Matmata. Originally, dwellings were carved into the rocks and  linked by tunnels. Many villages are abandoned, and the old stone houses are in ruins. Private initiatives endeavour to preserve this ancient culture. See more in the photobook "Tunisia Inside out" available > here
